TKM integrated research combines TKM and medical science/bio-engineering to (i) develop preventive medicines and treatments for target diseases and establish objective diagnosis techniques for chronic and intractable diseases; (ii) carry out basic integrated research to clarify TKM diagnosis and treatment mechanisms; and (iii) develop new TKM preparations and formulas.

Such research has led to discoveries of new herbal medicines that are effective in preventing and treating chronic and intractable diseases including diabetes complications; and the development of a TKM pattern identification program by using clinical information and biomarkers with a focus on strokes.

This research has also translated into the development of new TKM preparations that boost the efficacy of existing herbal medicines through convergence with BT; as well as the development of new types of TKM preparations and formulas that address the shortcomings of herbal medicine, i.e. inconvenience in taking and carrying.

Diabetic Complications Research Center

Development of novel herbal medicines for the treatment or prevention of diabetic complications, such as diabetic nephropathy, retinopathy and neuropathy
Development of therapeutic candidates from herbal plants, which can treat obesity and obesity-related disease such as insulin resistance, fatty liver and hyperlipidemia
Research on the pharmacological mechanisms of a novel herbal drug candidate and its active compound for the treatment or prevention of diabetic complications

Brain Disease Research Center

For the purpose of standardizing pattern identification (a unique TKM diagnosis method) the Brain Disease Research Center aims to establish an objective and scientific basis for pattern identification of stroke (a major disease dealt with by TKM) as a representative disease model. Towards this end, the center intends to organize a clinical network of institutions and establish a clinical database and bio-resource bank by collecting clinical materials and bio-resources from stroke patients and controls.

In addition, it plans to track the underlining biological mechanisms of pattern identification by exploring biological markers related to pattern identification; and applying them to pattern identification models through the adoption of Omics analytical methodologies.
